Get Ready for your U.S. Visa Interview

Once you receive your I-20 or DS-2019, the next step toward studying in the U.S. is securing your student visa. Without a visa, you can’t enter the country or begin your program. That means navigating the interview process at a U.S. embassy or consulate, an essential step before arriving on campus.

But here’s the reality: last year, 41% of student visa applications were denied.

The good news? With the right preparation, you can dramatically improve your chances of success and feel prepared, not overwhelmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The interview itself is usually very short, often less than five minutes! You might wait a long time at the embassy, so arrive early and be ready.

No. Only the person applying for the visa can go inside. But you can practice your answers before the interview with a friend or consultant.

Wear clean, professional clothes. Business casual is a good choice. You don’t need to wear a suit or very formal clothes.

The officer will tell you the visa denial reason and provide you with documentation of that reason. You should keep this documentation for review. A consultation can help you understand what to do next. With the right preparation, you may have success with better documents or a stronger case.

You can apply up to 365 days before your program starts. Apply as early as possible, wait times are increasing.

Important Note: You cannot enter the U.S. more than 30 days before your program start date, even if your visa is approved early.
