Homecoming: A Guide for International Students
If you suddenly notice more students wearing school colors, a marching band practicing on campus, and a sudden burst of excitement about football, homecoming may be approaching. For international students, it’s a chance to experience an American tradition and feel more connected to your school.
Homecoming is a celebration at many American colleges, usually held in the fall. The name refers to alumni, who are former students “coming home” to visit their school but current students are a big part of the festivities too!
What happens during homecoming?
Often homecoming centers on a football game, with activities throughout the week leading up to it. Traditions vary, but you might see a bonfire, free food, themed dress days, a parade for student clubs, a marching band on campus, and events by departments to help you feel proud of your school.
How to join in
You don’t need to understand American football (or even enjoy sports) to have fun at homecoming. Here is how to get involved:
- Find out what’s happening. Check your school email and website for homecoming activities open to current students.
- Check the details. Many events are free or inexpensive, but may require tickets or advance registration.
- Pick something that interests you. Try a parade or a smaller campus event if the football game doesn’t appeal to you.
- Invite someone along. Ask a friend or roommate to join you.
- Get curious. Ask about traditions you haven’t seen before. You don’t need to know all about the traditions to participate!
Many international students describe homecoming as a highlight of their year. Between classes and assignments, it’s a chance to meet people, make memories, and feel more connected to your campus.
After you graduate, you’ll be invited back for another homecoming, this time as one of the alumni yourself!
